This Succulent Hoop Wreath is easy to create using a hula hoop and a variety of faux eucalyptus, boxwood, and succulent stems.
I can not begin to describe how many times I went back and forth with different ideas on how to decorate the backside of our family room fireplace.
This big blank white wall was driving me crazy.
And I know that may sound crazy since most of our walls are blank white walls, but this is only the 4th space in our home that I’ve finished decorating.
The first was our master bathroom, followed by our powder room, and in March I finished decorating our kitchen.
So while most of the walls in our home are blank, that’s only because I haven’t started decorating those areas yet.
And with summer coming we knew we wanted to have at least one space outside where we could relax and enjoy the summer breeze.
But boy did I struggle with coming up with something for this wall.
I found so much inspiration while searching Pinterest for hoop wreath ideas and then even more inspiration once I moved over to Etsy.
The only problem, the large succulent hoop wreaths on Etsy that I loved weren’t in my price range.
So I headed to the store to make my own.
And I’m super excited with how it turned out!
Materials:
1 Hula Hoop (mine is between 32-34 inches)
Hot Glue Gun & Glue
2 Grey Green Eucalyptus Pick (different from the one above)
2 Boxwood Leaf Pick (different from the one above)
1. First, spray paint your hula hoop on one side, let dry, then flip the hula hoop over and spray paint the other side, and let dry again according to the spray paint instructions.
Side note: Next time I plan to sand down the hula hoop first so that the paint hopefully sticks better to the hula hoop. I had a couple of areas scratch, but I touched it up after we hung it outside by brushing on some spray paint (spray paint onto a disposable plate and use a small paintbrush to touch up areas).
2. Pull all of the greenery stems off of their branches and hot glue them one piece at a time to the hula hoop.
I didn’t use any particular order, simply use different stems as you go.
Also, you may notice a different glue in the 3rd picture, I started off using E6000 glue and then decided to switch over to a hot glue gun.
3. Once all of the greenery stems are attached to the hoop, hot glue the succulents to the hoop.
I carefully moved the stems to the side and glued the succulents to the hula hoop/stems and the leaves of the succulents to the leaves of the stems.
For the larger/heavier succulents I would also recommend that you use string, twine, or yarn to secure them better to the hoop along with the hot glue. I ran a small piece of yarn around the bottom layer of the succulent, tied it in a knot (so that the string was well attached to the succulent), and then tied the excess yarn around the hoop and tied it in another knot (cutting off the excess).
4. Hang your wreath and hot glue any extra greenery stems to any places that look sparse.
Tip: To help the hoop keep its shape add additional nails to the inner sides of the hoop. We have one on both the left and right of the hoop, hidden under the stems.
