DIY Swirled Marble Pumpkins

Sharing is caring!

These DIY Swirled Marble Pumpkins are made with nail polish and are a fun addition to your fall decor.

This craft was a major trial-and-error process for me.

I first tried it early last month (yes, I was creating fall content in June and July!) and it looked hilarious!

Part of the problem was the colors, the red I chose turned pink in the water, and while it still looked nice, my other colors were these two shades of orange and a brown/grey, so it didn’t totally go with the fall aesthetic I was going for.

But that wasn’t my only problem, I struggled with the buoyancy of the pumpkins and pushing them quickly while spinning them into the nail polish water.

I also made the mistake of not wearing gloves the first time, and not being prepared with nail polish remover.

To put it lightly, I was very frustrated.

The nail polishes I got for this project were still about half full, but I did not want to try again!

I’ve been trying so hard to get as far ahead as possible with content creation so there won’t be any lag time when we move this fall and so that we can have a week break during Christmas.

But August 1st came and I still had two fall projects I needed to complete that week in order to finish up my fall content before I started creating Christmas content the following week (last week).

When 1 of my 2 last fall projects failed, Roger suggested I give the DIY Swirled Marble Pumpkins another try since I still had all the materials.

So after going over it with him multiple times, we came up with some solutions for the parts that I struggled with the first time, and I gave it another go.

I had 4 pumpkins and the first one I practiced on turned out pretty, but I made the mistake of adding the red again (the red that turned pink in the water).

However, the next two turned out perfect!

Unfortunately on the 4th pumpkin, I tried to use a pumpkin that was way too big for my container (Whoops!) and then I promptly ran out of nail polish.

But that’s ok because trial and error is how we learn and now that I’ve learned what not to do, hopefully, my tutorial will help you with how to do it the first time. 🙂

Materials:

Wax Paper or Old Towel

Large Bowl*

Room Temperature/Warmish Water

Gloves

Nail Polish (I used this orange nail polish and this other shade of orange nail polish)

Toothpicks

Paper Towels

Pumpkins, artificial or real

Nail Polish Remover*

Instructions:

1. First, cover your workspace with wax paper or an old towel then place a large bowl filled with water (room temperature to warm) on top.

2. Put on the gloves and then pour each nail polish into the water in a swirly motion.

3. Use a toothpick to swirl the nail polish in the water.

4. Pick up your pumpkin by the stem and quickly swirl the pumpkin down into the nail polish and water, fully submerging the pumpkin in the water and then pull it right back out.

5. Use a paper towel to remove any excess nail polish in the water*, and repeat the process if one side of the pumpkin needs more color.

6. Repeat this process on all of your pumpkins.

7. Let dry and have fun decorating!

Notes:

1. Make sure your container is very large if doing larger pumpkins so that you plenty of have room to swirl/dunk the pumpkin.

2. Nail polish remover is for cleaning up the bowl afterward.

3. I found that when I tried to swirl the pumpkin in the leftover nail polish in the water it clumped up and didn’t have the same swirly pattern.

4. You may want to do this craft outside or near an open window as the scent of nail polish can get really strong.

Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
