Oh Mr. Darcy, how you have bewitched me, body & soul.

Have you ever fallen in love with a fictional character? For me, like most women, Mr. Darcy is the one whom I ardently love. The problem with finding a love like Mr. Darcy is that we focus so much on Darcy & forget all about Elizabeth.

Elizabeth has always been a character that I have loved, but for some reason when we talk of Mr. Darcy we forget that his love is for Elizabeth, not for you or me, but Elizabeth Bennet. Often I hear women talk of their high expectations of their (future) boyfriend or spouse & their list of ideals, but rarely – if ever – do I hear them talk about what kind of a woman they will be when they meet & marry their Mr. Darcy.

If we want to find our Darcy we must be like Elizabeth. Now of course I don’t mean literally, but that we should be as meant for our Mr. Darcy as Elizabeth was for hers. You can’t pray for a man of God & then hand Him a list of what you do & do not want, especially if you do not fit all of your own qualifications.

This also applies to married women, such as myself. It is so easy to have high expectations of your spouse & forget that a marriage takes two & not one. How can I ask my husband to give 100% to our marriage if I am not doing the same? And more importantly I can’t hope or expect my husband to be a man of God if I myself do not have a strong relationship with Christ.

I believe that the only way to find a love like Mr. Darcy is to give love like an Elizabeth. And as a Christian I know that the only way to truly give & receive true love is by having God’s love in my heart.

  1. Thank you for this piece! My friends and I always joke about finding Mr. Darcy. I don’t think any of us found our “perfect” match until we let go of the concept of Mr. Darcy and just lived and loved. Thank you!
