But to be honest, this was definitely a trust-the-process spring bouquet.

I searched for carrots with stems, and when I went to make the bouquet, I realized the stems/leaves were so long they just flopped over the vase.

I think if I had used a taller outer vase, it wouldn’t have flopped so much, but that’s ok, I made it work.

I trimmed away the excess (as there was so much) and weaved the rest of the carrot tops into the bouquet.

And so the bouquet wouldn’t look too leafy, I removed the majority of the leaves from the flower stems.

If you were watching closely, you may have noticed that I placed a glass vase inside the larger glass vase.

I had one very specific reason for doing this. I wanted to save the carrots!

Although I skipped the flower food, I wasn’t sure whether anything sprayed on the flowers might leak from the stems into the carrots, so I decided that using an inner vase for the flowers might be best to protect the carrots for later use.

When not on display during the day, I placed the bouquet in our garage fridge (the infamous empty one from my viral ice balls video that we bought while renting from my parents) to keep it fresh longer.

I needed it to last as I wanted it to still look beautiful when I gfited it to my niece (and birtheday twin), who was coming over to babysit our litttles (side note: I got a bit emotional when she came over, she just turned 16 and although she has been watching our kids for a few months, it just dawned on me that the baby girl I use to babysit is now babysitting my baby girl and I just can’t believe how time has passed so quickly!)

She and her sisters have horses, so I thought that while the horses were enjoying the carrots, they could be enjoying the beauty of these spring flowers.

If I do this again for a spring or Easter party, I will definitely make it up ahead of time, keep it in the fridge until right before the party, and then use it just for decorations day of (and remove the carrots from the bouquet immediately after the party, to be enjoyed by my niece’s horses or my other niece’s chickens) and then leave the bouquet display out to enjoy until the last petal falls.

Tips:

  1. I got the carrots with stems from Fresh Market.
  2. Place a tall/skinny glass vase inside a taller/larger glass vase before adding water.
  3. Make sure the water isn’t too high in either vase so it doesn’t spill over from the flower vase into the carrot vase (or vice versa).
  4. Skip the flower food if you plan to give the carrots to your animals.
  5. Trim excess carrot tops, then weave the remaining carrot tops into the bouquet so it hangs naturally and serves as a filler stem.
  6. To keep fresh longer, place the whole thing in your fridge before the party or at night.
