Earlier this month I shared the exciting news that Roger and I are expecting our first biological child this fall.

We are beyond thrilled and we feel so honored to have the opportunity to be parents again.

And of course, I couldn’t wait to start preparing a nursery for our little one.

So when the opportunity to work with the KILZ® Brand came again, and use their Magnolia Home by Joanna Gaines® paint line, I knew that a new fun creative project was just around the corner.

Since we don’t know if we are having a boy or girl yet, I decided that the closet would be the perfect first project to accomplish for the nursery.

While both of our foster girls are now living with family (at least this is the last that we heard), their rooms greatly need some help.

I decided that I wanted to turn big sis’s room into the nursery because it has one of the prettiest views in the house.

But this room needs quite a few changes before our new little one arrives.

Big sis only slept 2 nights in this room before we moved her downstairs closer to us (she felt safer downstairs), but it was still her room where she had a second bed (if she ever wanted it) along with all of her clothes and some of her toys.

When she first came to live with us we realized she wouldn’t be able to reach her clothes, so we set up a temporary shower curtain rod in the closet so that she could reach everything.

While it worked great while she was with us, it was only a temporary fix.

And when you go from 0 kids to 2 kids overnight, sometimes you just have to make do with what you have.

But this time we have months to prepare and we learned a lot from the experience of having an 8-10-month-old and a 5-year-old.

So we decided to turn that knowledge into a plan for the nursery closet.

And the first step was to find just the right paint color!

The Magnolia Home by Joanna Gaines paint line includes 150 timeless colors personally curated by Joanna, making it really easy to find a shade that’s perfect for your home.

As soon as I saw the color Emmie’s Room I knew it would be perfect for the nursery closet.

And what’s great is that their curated color palette makes it easy to find the right color, find colors that coordinate, and colors that are timeless and will last for years to come.

While I was at Ace Hardware picking up my paint I spent some time looking at the gorgeous variety of Magnolia Home by Joanna Gaines paint and I found so many colors that I loved for a boy nursery or a girl nursery.

Some of my favorites include “In Bloom” for a girl’s room and “Chime Gray” for a boy’s room, either way, the colors will go perfectly together!

After seeing big sis draw on everything I knew I needed high-quality paint, and Magnolia Home by Joanna Gaines paint is a high-quality interior paint with benefits including stain resistance and durability.

And to give it a good start, I primed the walls with KILZ 2® All-Purpose Primer, which blocks medium stains including minor water stains, rust, grease, ink, pencil, and felt marker. Plus their enhanced hiding features make it ideal for changing colors and helps lessen the number of coats of paint required.

So bring on the years of fun and messy memories!

Supplies:

*1. This primer is meant to be used on interior and exterior surfaces including woodwork, drywall, plaster, paneling, masonry, brick, painted metal, and properly prepared glossy surfaces. And it works with oil and water-based paints.

Tools:

  • Paint Supplies: brushes, stirring sticks, drop cloths, rollers, etc.
  • Cordless Drill
  • Phillips-head Screwdriver
  • Pencil
  • Measuring Tape

1. First, remove any wired shelving and fill the holes with the wall putty.

2. Once dry, prime the walls with KILZ 2 ALL-PURPOSE PRIMER. Be sure to follow the directions on the primer can for correct drying between each coat.

3. Next, paint the closet with Magnolia Home by Joanna Gaines paint in Emmie’s Room.

4. Once dry, position the bookcase in the center of the closet using the measuring tape and be sure to secure it to the wall.

5. Then install the closet rods to your desired height using the measuring tape and a pencil to mark the locations.

Tip: Measure up from the ground on both the wall and the bookcase as well as from the back wall to the rod on each side of the rod to help ensure that the rod is level.

6. That’s it! Now all that’s left is to add your favorite baskets, decor, toys, and baby clothes!
