3 language tips for traveling in Egypt to help you travel with ease.

I love traveling!

There is always so much to see, taste, learn, & experience when traveling to a foreign country.

One thing that often holds people back from traveling to a different country (outside of money, which I’ve found the solution to with these creative ways to make extra money for travel) is the language barrier.

And I totally understand!

The first time I traveled to Paris I was so worried I wouldn’t be able to communicate that I am a vegetarian at restaurants or ask directions to the nearest restroom.

But the more you travel, the more experience you gain, & the more courage you garner for your next trip.

Traveling to Paris, Barcelona, Rome, Cancun, & a road trip in Ireland were all good traveling stepping stones.

And as Egypt is the first middle eastern country I have traveled to, I am so excited to share with you what I have learned so as to help you plan your bucket list adventure to Egypt!

The official language of Egypt is Arabic, & if you are like me you probably didn’t learn any Arabic growing up.

But don’t let the fear of a language barrier keep you from your dream Egyptian vacation!

1. Egyptians in the Tourist Industry Speak English

Tourism in Egypt is a big deal!

There are even whole BA degrees in Egypt dedicated to hospitality & tourism.

Egypt wants to make sure their tour guides know their ancient civilization history & can properly give you a tour of their beautiful country.

So if you work with a travel agency or even book your own tours with legitimate tour companies you will have the opportunity to choose a tour guide that speaks English & has a thorough knowledge of Egyptian history.

2. Knowing a Few Key Phrases Can Go a Long Way

Although we did book a few tours, we also took taxi’s & Uber’s to different destinations while in Egypt.

And while most of our drivers spoke a very surprising amount of English, there were still some language barriers.

Knowing even just a few key phrases to help you get around can go a long way in making your trip smoother.

I usually keep a note of important phrases in my phone just in case my mind draws a blank & I need to respond or ask a question quickly.

3. The More You Know the Better Your Adventure

But the reality is, the more Arabic you know the better your adventure will be in Egypt.

Because the more Arabic you know the more freedom you will have to go off of the beaten path.

You will be able to have experiences unlike other tourists around you because you can hear, understand, & respond.

By spending just a little bit of time each day prior to your trip learning Arabic you will feel more prepared to spend an afternoon exploring Cairo’s marketplace & conversing with locals.

  1. Guides with legitimate tour agencies are worth the expense in many parts of the world. I didn’t know that about Egypt tour guides but after the guides we had in Tuscany and Rome, I’m not surprised. Those guides study for a few years for certification. Nothing like having an art history major with her masters giving you a tour through the Vatican. Glad to read your tips for mideastern travel.
