How a Mistake Gone Viral led to a New Year’s Resolution that will be hard to keep.

I made a mistake at the end of last year that went viral, in a bad way.
You can read about my mistake (on pride and humility) on Instagram here and on the viral video on TikTok here.
When I posted it I thought it might be a bit controversial, but I figured people would read the description/caption and that would bring understanding and less negativity to the post.
But either people didn’t read the caption (hindsight: I should have put text on the video telling people to read the description), or they didn’t understand it.
So my post which was meant to be about pride and humility going into the new year, became a way for people to vent and spread negativity.
Because the reality is, people who are filled with love and joy don’t feel the need to post negative or hateful comments online.
Yes, everyone is open to having an opinion and not everyone is ever going to agree about everything, but taking the time to leave a negative comment, even one as simple as “no” (which I got A LOT of on this particular post) doesn’t come from a place of joy, peace, or love.
Negativity and troll comments are an expression of hurt and pain.
Originally, I planned to make this a lesson for myself and turn it into a New Year’s resolution to not respond to any negative comments.
But I don’t think that is what Christ would want me to do.
While there will be times that I will need to block people and delete comments that are foul, I know He doesn’t want me to ignore the pain and sorrow in this world.
So instead of responding in kind with more negativity, or trying to justify myself (people-pleasing is one of my personality traits), I’m going to do my best to respond with love and kindness.
This may be a response as simple as “I hope you have a wonderful day!” or it may mean I stop what I’m doing to pray for that person before blocking them and deleting their foul comment (as I’ve had people tell me they want me to d*e).
And just like any New Year’s resolution, this is going to be a very hard one to keep.
But with prayer, faith, and determination we can make this world a better place both online and within our circle of influence.
I pray you have the most wonderful new year!
