I’m so excited to share this Watermelon Cake!
And don’t worry, my 2-year-old son and 92-year-old grandmother greatly enjoyed the extra watermelon.
They both sat and snacked on it while watching me build this cake made entirely of fruit and topped with more fruit and fresh mint leaves.
I secured the watermelon cake with long wooden skewers and attached the fruit with wooden toothpicks.
We had a large family gathering with Roger’s family that night and cutting it was as simple as slicing and serving.
The toothpicks in the fruit can be removed when serving or left in the berries to be used/served as finger food.
What’s your favorite fruit will you add to your Watermelon Cake this summer?

Friendly Note: This is not an original idea (as is nothing in life). In under 2 minutes, I was able to find over a dozen similar to identical cakes (same layers, fruits, and styling) on Pinterest. I love giving credit when I find unique inspiring tutorials and when Jennifer at The Lemon Apron reached out saying that it was her original idea back in 2019 and asking for credit on my blog I wanted to make sure I added it ASAP because I believe in women supporting women.

Watermelon Cake
A Watermelon Cake made of only watermelon and decorated with lots of fresh fruit.
Ingredients
- Watermelon, 1 large + 1 small
- Wood Skewers
- Wood Toothpicks
- Grapes
- Blueberries
- Blackberries
- Raspberries
- Fresh Mint
Instructions
- First, cut the watermelons into 3 cylinder shapes; one large, one medium, and one small.
- Then cut off the watermelon rind and cut off the corner edges to make them into a smoother cylinder.
- Place the large watermelon cylinder on a cake stand and then place the medium one on top of it.
- Poke 4 large wood skewers down into the center of the two watermelon cylinders on the cake stand. You will want them to be near the center so the small watermelon will sit on top.
- Press the small watermelon cylinders through the skewers and onto the medium watermelon cylinder.
- Next, arrange the fruit on the watermelon with toothpicks.
- I started with grape clusters cascading down from the top to the base, with extra grape clusters at the base.
- Then I added blackberries, blueberries, raspberries (some with blueberries in them), and strawberries (both halved & whole) and secured the fruit with toothpicks.
- Finally, I added mint leaves.
- Slice and serve carefully, removing toothpicks and skewers as needed.
Notes
- I made this Watermelon Cake mid-morning/early afternoon and served it in the evening. I kept it in the fridge with a hand towel under it (in case of any watermelon juice leaked). We then took it to my in-law’s house for a family party but stopped by our land (and drove up a hill that was very bouncy), and it survived the trip. I covered it in cling wrap (so it would stay clean and I could hold it and keep it safe on our bumpy gravel road) with towels around the base (for any dripping) so it would survive the trip. It sat on the table at the party for ~30 minutes before being served.
- I served it in slices like a regular cake, starting on the top tier and working my way down the cake, removing the berries/toothpicks as I went down the Watermelon Cake. The toothpicks in the fruit can be removed when serving (like when given to children) or left in the berries to be used/served as finger food.

This is beautiful and perfect for my granddaughter’s 13th birthday. She is an absolute fruit lover but not so much a cake lover. When I saw this during the summer, I knew it would be perfect for her this year. Unfortunately her birthday is the day after Christmas, so 12/26, and I am so hoping I am able to find the fruit needed to make it as beautiful as you have..
Sincerely greatful,
Grandma Tina
