I went through several different designs, colors, and ideas for this DIY Clay Christmas Tree Candle Holder.
In the end, I decided to go with a dark green Christmas tree with bright, colorful Christmas lights.
I placed a flameless tealight candle underneath to make the colorful lights shine bright.
After trying it out in several places around our home, I ended up placing it in my son’s little play kitchen that we decorated together for Christmas.

Materials (click to shop):
Oven-Bake Clay – also available on Amazon – click HERE, I used 1lb out of 3lbs
Craft Rolling Pin, here is a similar one (any rolling pin not used for food)
Scissors
String
Craft Paint – Mixed for tree: Green 1, Green 2, and Green 3. For lights: Caribbean Blue, Bright Magenta, Palm Leaf (similar to Bright Palm), and Mustard Yellow
Instructions:
1. First, roll out the clay to your desired thickness. Mine was ~1/4-1/2 of an inch.
Note: The thicker it is, the longer it will take to dry.
2. Wrap the outside of the small cone in plastic wrap.
3. Then wrap the clay around the cone and cut off the excess clay.
4. Use the rolling pin on the clay cone to press the seam together.
5. Cut the excess clay off the top, and shape it back into a point.
6. Use a piece of string to evenly cut off the base to make a smaller Christmas tree and remove the excess clay.
7. Use a toothpick to create a light swirl indentation from the top to the bottom of the tree. I used this as a guide to know where to put the holes for the Christmas “lights.”
8. Then use the thicker side of the toothpick to create holes in the clay along the swirl down and around the Christmas tree.
9. Carefully remove the cardboard cone and plastic wrap from inside and place the clay Christmas tree on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
10. Bake according to the Oven Bake Clay instructions.
11. Once the clay Christmas tree is dry and hardened, let it cool.
12. Pour and mix craft paint on a paper plate to create your desired color(s) and use a paintbrush to paint the tree green. Let dry.
13. Then paint the holes with your favorite colors to create Christmas lights. Let dry.
14. Once dry, add a sealant to your DIY Clay Christmas Tree Candle Holder, and let it dry.
I completely forgot to add a sealant at the end. But you can see how clay sealed with resin looks on my Clay Leaf Napkin Holder here, and how a clay sealed with a spray acrylic sealer looks on my Clay Christmas Tree trinket dish here.
15. Place a flameless tealight candle under the Christmas tree and enjoy!

God’s voice thunders in marvelous ways; he does great things beyond our understanding. He says to the snow, ‘Fall on the earth,’ and to the rain shower, ‘Be a mighty downpour.’
